Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence near the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who ran away after the explosion was located soon after. All three have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the property was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the blast had happened on a level above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
