California's Governor States He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has revealed that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor stated when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's tenure as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any decision is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has emerged as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on a major news network. Duffy disclosed plans to cut government money from the state and suggested eliminating the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, following a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in fatalities and injured individuals.

Newsom's office noted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team responded in a previous statement addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recently conducted poll showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the American people."
