US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official stated.
