Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was charged with battery with injury, public intoxication, and illegally entering a car following a Saturday altercation in Indianapolis that resulted in his hospitalization with knife injuries.

According to court documents, Sanchez confronted a senior delivery man at a hotel loading bay. The driver stated he believed “Sanchez is trying to kill me” and used a defensive spray to protect himself. When the spray did not stop the former athlete from moving toward him, the driver reported stabbing Sanchez “two or three times”. He then allegedly pushed the driver against a dumpster before a look of shock came across his face and he “ran away”.

Detectives have examined video footage of the event. Witnesses reported that Sanchez and the driver filmed each other with their mobile phones throughout the altercation.

Officials stated in the legal document, “Mr Sanchez is seen chasing [the man] and the video depicts Mr Sanchez grabbing and throwing [the man] towards the wall of the hotel.”

Based on the affidavit, Sanchez told police “all he could remember was reaching for a window.” He did not remember the identity of his assailant or the location of the event.

“What happened was avoidable,” the county attorney commented. “What began as a dispute between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man ought not to have turned into a physical fight or caused severe harm to anyone. The analyst was in Indianapolis to report on the football match with the Las Vegas Raiders on the weekend as part of his Fox Sports duties.
