Match official the official had barely sounded the final whistle to seal Everton's last-gasp win over Crystal Palace when the Merseyside outfit updated the profile on their social media.

Below the team's iconic badge appeared a short phrase: England Needs Grealish.

It is almost a year since Jack Grealish last sported a Three Lions shirt in a three-one international win over Finland in the Finnish capital under interim manager the former coach.

And it will be while longer before the 30-year-old gets the opportunity to play for his country again after being omitted from Thomas Tuchel's latest squad for a friendly against Wales next Thursday, followed by a World Cup qualifier in the Baltic nation on the 14th of October.

But one thing remains perfectly evident: Grealish is doing everything he can to play his way into Tuchel's plans for the upcoming World Cup.

Having delivered four assists in his initial half-dozen top-flight appearances for the Blues, Grealish netted the 93rd-minute winner to seal his side's comeback victory after the Palace keeper had denied Beto from point-blank range.

Recorded at 92 minutes and 21 seconds, it was Everton's most recent home Premier League winning goal since spring 2022 against the Magpies - 98 minutes and 20 seconds.

"Can you believe this?" said the star, in an interview with broadcasters after the game.

"Our recent matches we've played here we've been tied and I've said to myself in the 85th minute, 'push yourself, go and score. Think about scoring a late goal'.

"I thought it against Villa, and I didn't score. I repeated it against West Ham and I couldn't convert.

"Today, I really thought the exact words again and I scored. I ran to where my mum and dad were, so it was nice."

'England omission not a big deal'

The weekend's game was Grealish's last for a few weeks - having only recently to string together six straight league starts for the first time in almost 30 months.

He will be not allowed to face his owning team City when his loan side return to action after the international break on 18 October.

There are over eight months before the start of the World Cup. Is Grealish likely to be on board the national team flight?

"You know what?" he told the radio station after the Palace game, "it's not as deep as people make out."

"At the end of the day, you want to play for the national team but people are doing well in my position. I'm also performing also, but the people picked previously did really well in the recent matches so that's fine with me.

"The coach makes the choices and I fully respect that."

Grealish added: "My priority is playing for this club because they are the ones that showed faith in me and had confidence in me, so I'm thoroughly loving it here."

But, ex-international the legendary forward informed BBC Sport that the player's performances for the Merseysiders will be creating Tuchel a "selection problem".

"The only thing for him is keep doing what he is achieving, obviously scoring a goal today," commented the pundit, who scored over fifty strikes in 120 appearances for the national team.

"I'm sure if he keeps doing that he will be in contention come the tournament.

"If Jack plays, his talent will show, so I'm confident he'll be posing the England manager a dilemma."

'Johnny-on-the-spot'

Tuchel maintains the door remains open for the playmaker, who has numerous international appearances and several strikes for his nation, in terms of the World Cup next summer.

"There's invariably a way back into the squad," the England boss stated on Friday.

"Jack knows that I see how impactful he is for the team and that he is on his path to be the best version of himself."

In Grealish's several league games since arriving on a temporary deal from City, he has played 556 minutes, had five goal involvements, set up numerous opportunities and had 10 shots.

"Jack's done great again," said manager the coach after his side's first win since late August.

"I've been urging him to score more. He is always in the right place.

"Iliman Ndiaye's cross was incredible and Beto should have scored. But Grealish is positioned well to score the goal."

The manager revealed the player had missed training during the week because of a slight issue, noting: "He has had to miss the odd day of training but he is doing a many good things."

The midfielder was not the sole individual excluded from Tuchel's national squad who managed to score this round of fixtures.

The forward netted again for Barcelona - although they were defeated four-one at their opponents - while Mason Mount got a goal in Manchester United victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
