Historical organ composition
The composer is believed to have composed the pair of organ works during his early years

Recently identified musical pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach have been unveiled and performed in Germany for the first time in three hundred twenty years.

The nation's Cultural Affairs Minister the government representative called the finding of the pair of works a "important event for the world of music".

They first caught the attention of a Bach researcher in the early nineties when he was documenting the composer's papers at the Brussels archive.

The organ pieces - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor composition - were undated and unsigned. Mr Wollny spent the subsequent thirty years working to verify the origin of the pieces.

Historic Performance

They were presented at the historic Leipzig church in the German city, where Bach is buried and where he worked as a church musician for over two decades.

The pair of works were performed by Dutch musician Ton Koopman, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the premiere in 320 years.

He said the works were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a great asset for modern musicians, as they are also appropriate for reduced-scale organs".

Cultural Relevance

They are believed to have been created at the beginning of Bach's professional life, when he was serving as an music instructor in the town of the German town in central Germany.

Mr Wollny, who is now the director of the Bach research center in the municipality, said they demonstrated several features unique to the artist.

"Musically, the compositions also include aspects that can be observed in Bach's works from this period, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are believed to have been transcribed in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, the musical student.

At a presentation of the compositions, Mr Wollny said he was "almost completely confident that the composer had written the two pieces" and they have now been added into the official catalogue of his musical output.
