Moscow's Drones and Rockets Strike Western Ukrainian City of Lviv in Prolonged Attack

In the early hours of Sunday, the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, often considered as one of the safest urban centers in the country, suffered among its most sustained strikes following the beginning of Russia's full-scale military campaign.

For five hours, Moscow's Iranian-designed drones and missiles targeted the city, located about 70 kilometers from the border with Poland. Large blasts were audible from the city center, a designated UNESCO heritage location.

Casualties and Damage Throughout Ukraine

Nationwide, at least five individuals were killed – four individuals in the region of Lviv and another in the Zaporizhzhia city. Additionally, 14 people were injured. Among the victims was a teenage girl, who died along with three other family members when their home was hit.

Part of Lviv was experienced power outages, as reported by the city leader. Significant blazes erupted in various locations, such as a industrial zone in the southern part of the urban center.

As the acrid odor of smoke and fumes permeated the area, the local administration head urged inhabitants to keep windows shut and refrain from going outside or to utilize protective masks or breathing apparatus.

International Responses and Security Actions

Polish military aviation reported it deployed fighter aircraft and took preventive action to secure its territorial skies following a recent incursion by deceptive unmanned vehicles. Additionally, there were numerous unmanned aircraft observations last week in EU countries such as Denmark and Germany.

The nation's leader urged international partners to strengthen air defences and to establish a no-fly zone – a measure that has so far been met with reluctance.

"An independent cessation of hostilities in the air is attainable – and it is exactly this which could pave the path to real diplomacy. America and Europe must act to compel Putin stop," the statement emphasized.

Over the past few days, Russian forces has targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leading to power blackouts in several regions, a tactic employed in the approach to winter for the previous three winters. At the same time, Ukrainian forces has been strike oil production facilities deep inside Russia with its own long-range drones.

Cultural Consequences

Lviv was underway of the annual Lviv literary festival, with writers and attendees gathered in the city for one of the largest literary events in eastern Europe.

In addition to Ukrainian writers, including poets Julia Musakovska and Artur Dron, there were international speakers featuring UK-based Forward prizewinning author Fiona Benson, and, joining by remote connection, the Booker prize-winner Bernardine Evaristo, and the Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk.

By Sunday morning, ash was continuing to descend on the roads of Lviv, as exhausted locals emerged and attended church services. The twisted metal remains of a unmanned aircraft rested on a pavement outside a apartment building, marked off with red tape.
