The Battle Royale's Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream During This Update

The game developers have an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale players, perfectly timed for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's super-slick traversal will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on Nov. 4.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Mantle Boosting" by the developers, this feature provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when scaling ledges and walls. According to lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of the game for some time, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." However it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. This season, the team simplifies the process for everyone to successfully perform these tricky speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in the game for some time, but executing it requires skill to pull off and a player would never know it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese states. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so users can clearly identify when and how to trigger the fast-paced movement ability, opening up the feature and adding fresh strategies to play for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

Why make a once niche technique available to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says the team wants gamers to feel powerful — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we examined at our competition, looked at what our players are doing, and we wondered, 'What if we extend some of this power to a broader audience?'" Mohan clarifies. "Because currently, certain techniques are somewhat awkward to use — you need to remap your keybinds and hit one-frame windows. We proposed, 'How about we make a polished version?'"

The Amped Update Movement Focus

Movement is largely the central theme in Season 27, with Legends Horizon, Rampart, and Valkyrie all getting buffs to maintain them in motion. The cooldown period on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will boost players upward much quicker than before. Rampart's Amped Cover feature a roof and capability to grant movement bonuses to those nearby. But the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting the most attention this season, with various adjustments implemented to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and deadlier.

"I think there's quite a consensus that her moment has arrived," says Legend designer the designer. "Certainly that she's been top-tier in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it felt like she fell behind in current the game. It was a really great opportunity for the team to revisit multiple elements in her abilities and sort of bring her back to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says the team assessed each of her abilities and implemented some powerful modifications. Her jetpack have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, enabling the player to spend more time in the air. Now she won't be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to mark enemies who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which lifts teammates skyward for repositioning or escape — now takes reduced delay to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that players can choose to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her ultimate activation.

"Her jet pack fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that opens up bottlenecks and makes claiming the high ground a bit less daunting. Respawn state Apex Legends Season 27 is all about giving players the resources required to keep up with the competition.

"Really, we were looking at the game's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," says lead Legend designer the lead.

Apex Legends the Amped season releases Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
